Stan Lee & POW! Release Statement About His Social Media Accounts

Stan Lee and POW! Entertainment have issued a statement regarding the comic legend’s social media accounts, hoping to clear up the confusion over who was behind them.

Posted on Stan Lee’s website earlier today, the statement explains:

To help Stan continue the tradition started with Stan’s Soapbox, POW!’s social media team created and has for years solely managed therealstanlee Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook accounts, as well as the Facebook page realstanlee, with Stan’s participation and approval.

But, recently access and management of the Twitter account was temporarily out of our (and Stan’s) control. That situation has now been rectified. Stan Lee’s social media accounts are once again being exclusively managed by POW! with Stan’s participation.

Unlike certain recent statements that were falsely presented in Stan’s voice, we want to assure you of our promise to be completely transparent and honest with you, the fans. POW! would never want to break your trust or put you in a position where you are unsure of Stan’s participation in his social media.

The statement concludes with a pledge that, though social media statuses are written by POW! staff, all messages the come directly from Lee will include the signoff “Stan.” The statement itself is signed “Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment.” There is no mention of who exactly was using Lee’s social media accounts without authorization, nor which tweets were falsely written.

In May, Lee (or someone alleging to be him) tweeted: “Today was the first day I ever did a tweet myself. Before today, my account was done by others. I still do not have control of my Facebook. Someone else is doing it, NOT me.” Shortly thereafter, the writer reiterated this claim, stating that, with the exception of the @therealstanlee Twitter account, all of his social media accounts had been “hacked.”

Today’s statement comes two days after Stan Lee dismissed his $1 billion lawsuit against POW! Entertainment, less than eight weeks after the initial suit was filed.

Today’s statement is the latest in what has been an increasingly strange and tumultuous year for the 95-year-old comics creator. His wife of 70 years passed away in December, and shortly thereafter allegations of elder abuse were lodged against Lee’s caretakers, including his own daughter – claims which Lee quickly denied. More recently, Lee filed a restraining order against his business manager and claimed that his blood had been stolen and mixed into the ink for several collectable comics at Marvel’s Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. at Treasure Island.
